Below is a sample outline curriculum from the 12-week self-stigma an HIV course. We hope this will work as a tool for other HIV self-stigma programmes or help guide stigma interventions.
Our curriculum model:
Twelve 4-hour weekly group sessions
+
One 1-hour individual session per week
Self-stigma; negative self-judgement resulting in shame, worthlessness, and blame represents an important but neglected aspect of living with HIV. It impacts a person's ability to live positively, limits meaningful self-agency, quality of life, adherence to treatment and access to health services. Although high levels have been reported through the People Living with HIV Stigma Index, few interventions exist to specifically tackle this issue; particularly interventions that provide men and women living with HIV with skills to address self-stigma in peer-support groups in resource-poor settings.
The 12-week course curriculum was carefully designed based upon formative research. Each module contains a combination of practical exercises, reflection and self-inquiry. Participants work in pairs and as part of a larger group. It is delivered by Certified Facilitators or Coaches of The Work of Byron Katie.
